Edmund Berninger was born in Arnstadt, Thüringia, Germany, in 1843. He trained at first as a pharmacist but then switched to painting, studying under Theodor Hagan at the Kunstschule (Art School) in Seimeter, in Weimar.

In 1874 he moved to Munich. He produced watercolours, sketches, and oil paintings based on his travels to Constantinople, Palestine, Tunisia, the United Kingdon, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, and Tunisia.
He also worked as an illustrastor, including for the German magazine Jugend.
