Inconstancy, or Inconstantness [in Painting and Sculpture]

Inconstancy, or Inconstantness [in Painting and Sculpture]
The Ancients represented Inconstancy very aptly, in Sculpture and Painting, by a Woman clad in Blue, holding a Moon in her Hand, and having at her Feet a Crab; because that Fish goes sometimes backwards, and sometimes forwards; the blue Garment is designed to represent the Waves of the Sea, which are always fluctuating; the Moon needs no Explanation.
