Hassan.
Caliph of the Ottoman empire; noted for his hospitality and splendour. His palace was daily thronged with guests, and in his seraglio was a beautiful young slave named Leila (2 syl.), who had formed an unfortunate attachment to a Christian called the Giaoʹur. Leila is put to death by an emir, and Hassan is slain by the Giaour near Mount Parnassus. (Byron: The Giaour.)
Al Hassan. The Arabian emirʹ of Persia, father of Hinda, in Moore’s Fire-Worshippers. He was victorious at the battle of Cadessia, and thus became master of Persia.
