This black and white engraving is of a colour painting. A woman walks away from us: we see her ankles under her dress. She carries a basket in her right hand and perhaps a tray under her left arm with a cloth over it: it’s raining. The woman is about to pass two other women who are walking towards us, one in a striped blouse. There are a variety of other people on the street in the background, both male and female, including one person with a raised umbrella. The street is cobbled. On the right we just see the fronts of tall Amsterdam buildings, some with open windows, but the road is going straight away from us so we don’t see much of the buildings. About half of the picture, from the top left corner down, is a blotchy grey sky.
