At the top of this engraving of a drawing is the title, in German and in pink, Die verlorene Stadt, or, The lost city.
The main part of the picture shows on the left a naked man sitting on a ledge; he is facing to our right and partly away from us, and his right leg with its bare foot dangles loose; his left foot is flat on the ledge and his left arm rests on his left knee. He has a pink crown of coral and a pink top-knot. There’s a pink jellyfish right in front of him and his curved back is to the spire of a cathedral. On right right in the foreground is a huge fish.
In the background and far below we see the roofs of half-timbered houses and pehaps even a castle of this imaginary underwater city.
