Manifesto

,—a kind of composition in which bullying generals and lying ministers excel. The Duke of Brunswick threatened to put all the Parisians to fire and the sword; and he gave the French notice of it by means of his celebrated manifesto. But, owing probably to the badness of the roads, as well as other unavoidable accidents, his Serene Highness, after having proceeded part of the way, was under the necessity of postponing his journey.

Entry taken from Political Dictionary, edited by Charles Pigott from prison and printed in 1795.
