Gown

,—a robe of innocence, when applied to the church. If a parson should insult a citizen in the grossest manner, the insult must be passed over; his gown protects him. Gown also, as appertaining to lawyers, with the addition of an enormous wig, constitutes learning, purity and patriotism. It is this same gown that gives consistency to versatility, makes abuse candour, makes egotism virtue, makes vanity modesty, and gives to brutality the semblance of spirit: in short, it can convert a Rook into a great man! !
