A good start is to scroll down to Levels and choose Fade to White for a light background, or fade towards black for a dark one. After that you might like to try an effect or two.

borders

border: add a border inside the image (this will overwrite part of the image)
borderscale: add a border inside the image, scaling image to fit
innerbevel: lowered 3D border effct
outerbevel: raised 3D border effect
rolldown: roll image down 10%
rollleft: roll image 10% to the left
rollright: roll image 10% to the right
rollup: roll image up 10%

colour

desaturate: desaturate, go to shades of grey
meblue:  it blue
mecyan:  it cyan blue
megreen:  it green
memagenta:  it magenta red
meorange:  it orangish red
meyellow:  it yellow
stronger: make the colours bolder, 25% more saturated
sweaker: make the colours weaker, 25% less saturated

effects

blur: smooth the image by averaging each pixel with its neighbours
charcoal: simulate a charcoal drawing
despeckle: despeckle (remove small dots)
ditherbw: dither to black and white noise
edge: edge detection
emboss: Laplacian relief: make it look carved
enhance: enhance (remove noise)
implode: implode the image about the centre
invert: invert (negate) the image, swap black and white
noisegauss: add Gaussian noise
noiseimpulse: add noise of type Impulse
noisesmooth: reduce noise but try to keep sharp edges
oilpainting: smear the image like an oil painting
overlay: overlay the background on the original image
segment: segment the image using ImageMagick
sharpen: implode the image about the centre
threshhold: local adaptive thresholding
underlay: overlay the original image on top of the background

levels

brighten: make the image 25% brighter
contrast: increase contrast
darken: make the image 25% darker
darker: fade the image towards black
flatten: reduce contrast
grayer: fade the image towards gray
lighter: fade the image towards white
stretch: stretch contrast (histogram equalisation)

tranforms

backwards: mirror (flip left/right so the image is backwards)
upsidedown: upsidedown image (flip top/bottom)
original image
