A linden tree with a trunk at least a metre (three feet) wide, stands at the back of this scene. It has a skull fastened to it, three wodden masks (I think), and a creature or small gnome maybe standing on what looks like a stone altar.

So it’s a religious place. The sacred linden grove, a clearing in an ancient forest.

It’s full of people, and the light in this black and white engraving is on a bearded warrior, with breastplate and with a horned helmet, thrusting a spear into a priest’s chest in a gruesome manner (for once you are fortunate if you can’t see, really). There’s a pile of dead people, one with a wooden shield, at the base of the tree. More chasing with daggers and clubs in the foregoround, where two or three women are trying to hide, and again on the left. In the background on the right, raised swords and clubs suggesting a battle.
