Deˊodand [deodandum, qu.Dandum Deo, i.e.to be devoted to God]
a thing as it were forfeited to God, to attone for the violent death of a man by misadventure; as if a man were killed by the accidental fall of a tree, or run over by a cart­wheel; then the tree or cart­wheel, or cart or horses is to be sold, and the money to be given to the poor.
