The image is black and white. It was made by scanning a printed book. The image in the book was printed from a wood-engraving which was made by Eric Gill in 1930 especially for the book.
This page is at the start of Saint John’s Gospel. The eagle is very stylized and is facing us, with its head looking somewhat to its right (and hence to our left). The snkae is black with thin white lines marking the scales, and is quite wriggly. The snake’s head points downward, possibly symbolic of pointing towards Hell.
