Image description for Birth of the Rose

[the image described here]

The statue depicts a young man or older boy with curly hair gazing upward. He is holding up a rose in his left hand and pointing to it with his right. He is naked, his genitals covered by a drape of carved cloth. He has wings. He stands on a circular base next to a tree-stump almost waist high which has an iris growing up and round it, and on the top of which the other end of his (unfastened) loin-cloth is draped. His left foot is flat on the circular base but his hips have swayed to his left a little, so that only the toes of his right foot, which is behind the left almost as if he were walking, touch the ground.

The picture is scanned from a very pale and delicate black-and-white engraving.
