<p>A tall crucifix (a cross bearing a man being tortured to death) stands on a desk or table; it emanates light, dhining on a book propped open behind it, and on a skull. The skull may represent the miraculously incorrupt head of the saint, or could represent the hill, Golgotha, where Jesus was crucified, as that hill was said to have the shape of a skull. There is also an egg-timer, prepresenting mortality. <p><i xml:lang="de" lang="de">Sommerabend</i>, which is, <i>Summer Evening</i>, painted by Hermann Sschlittgen and shown at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition (<i lang="de" xml:lang="de">der Grossen Berliner Kunstausstellung</i>) in 1893.</p> <p>The picture shows, i think, a mother sitting by a stone railing at night, gazing off into the distance, perhaps out to sea, but keeping half an eye out on her daughter who is holding a Chinese lantern, which illuninates her face.</p> <p>There might be an unspoken message that the child’s father is away, a sailer perhaps, or has gone ot China.</p>Liamhttps://www.fromoldbooks.org/
