Beyle, Marie Henri (17881842)

Beyle, Marie Henri, French critic and novelist, usually known by his pseudonym “De Stendal,” born at Grenoble; wrote in criticism “De l'Amour,” and in fiction “La Chartreuse de Parme” and “Le Rouge et le Noir”; an ambitious writer and a cynical (17881842).
