Notes:

The English home of the Washingtons

Now little more than a farm house, the manor was a priory of St Andrew’s before the Reformation in the 16th Century. It’s located in Sulgrave, near Banbury in Oxfordshire. Sulgrave manor official web site.

John Washington left for Virginia in 1656; his second wife, Anne, was the daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel Nathaniel Pope JP, who gave John and Anne 700 acres at Mattox Creek.

John and Anne Washington had a son, Lawrence; Lawrence’s son Augustine married Jane, daughter of Major Caleb Butler JP. They in turn had a son called George Washington, born in February 1732. George Washington was the first president of the US.
