South West View with Cloisters. “At Hereford, where the present tower was built in the fourteenth century, there was also, as in some large monastic churches, a tall tower above the western bay of the nave. This fell in 1786, a circumstance which led to a disastrous restoration of the nave.” (p. 83) Hereford Cathedral Web site says “Hereford Cathedral’s 17th century Chained Library is the largest to survive with all its chains, rods and locks intact.” |
