Notes: |
The word ‘bar’ here means gate, not somewhere you buy a drink. Bootham Bar in the city of York stands on the site of one of four gateways into the Roman legionary fortress, but the gate there today dates from the 11th and 14th century, with some restoration work done in 19th century. www.york.gov.uk has a picture and a timeline. |
