Notes:

The picture shows a young man lying on the floor of a prison cell or castle dungeon [donjon], his hands on his head, and with one ankle chained to the wall. There are a great number of rats or mice in the chamber.

“He had nae been i’ the court of France
    A twelvemoth nor sae long,
Till he fell in love with the king’s daughter,
    An’ was thrown in prison strong.” (p. 10)
