This picture of a Manticore was engraved in brass and included in the 1678 edition of this book. It is taken from Tab. LII. The Manticore, or Martigora was described by Pliny and Aristotle as a creature with the face and ears of a human, with grey eyes and a red body; a tail with a sting like that of a scorpion, and being the size of a lion, and with a lion’s paws, a triple row of teeth and an appetite for human flesh. |
