The text of Gallonio: Tortures

OF THE SEVENTH, NAMELY WHEN THE SUFFERERS’ BODIES ARE SUSPENDED BY ROPES, THEIR SHOULDERS AT THE SAME TIME BEING LOADED WITH HEAVY LUMPS OF SALT AND THE LIKE.

This seventh kind is mentioned in the Acts of St. Gregory of Armenia, where we read thus: “When St. Gregory had ended dilating at length on these matters, Tyridates was filled with anger above all measure, and furiously stirred up against him. Accordingly the most noble hero was instantly bound. Then after they had inserted a wooden gag into his mouth, parting the upper and lower jaws as widely as possible, they loaded his shoulders with lumps of salt, which is dug up in Armenia. Then binding his holy body with ropes, they suspended the Saint aloft, prolonging this bitter torment for seven whole days.” So far the Acts of St. Gregory, which (if the truth must be told) make very clearly manifest to us the nature and enormity of this mode of suspension.
